What Is Africanism Today

Africanism seeks to promote and celebrate Africa through its art and culture. It is focuses on the re-education and enlightenment of the beauty of everything African, of what is “ours”, our culture, our history, our stories, our arts.

  • We hope to shed light on the diverse beauty of Africa, encourage it to be a part of us, not something to be glorified as a trend or looked upon as backward but something that is beautiful and worth including in our everyday life.
  • We want to debunk negative stereotypes associated with Africa and black people.
  • We hope to positively influence and inspire African youths.

The first edition of Africanism Today held 29th of July 2016 in the University of Lagos and focus was on natural hair and African hairstyles. About 200 African youths attended and 6 art works and different African hairstyles were exhibited. More than half of the attendees wore traditional African attire to the event.

There were five speakers who talked about Africanism, African hair history, how to take care of African natural hair, owning one’s journey as a African embracing natural hair, debunking African hair stereotypes and highlighting it’s beauty.

The second edition of Africanism today is set to hold June of 2017. There are four segments to it. The e-book, charity, carnival and the main event. The e-book is the first segments and submissions will commence 14th of February 2017.
